Literature/Music – Mia Capotorto Sommese

The Exhibit

Mia Capotorto Sommese presents the journey behind the creation of her new musical, The Exhibit, co-written with composer Jonathan Winton Brenner. The piece takes place in a world much like ours, where every zoo includes a Homo sapien exhibit. As seven humans exist in the monotony of a lifetime under captive observation, they rediscover their place in the animal kingdom and discover the primal truths that civilization allowed them to forget.

The Exhibit was developed through Baby Crow Productions under the working title Sapien Sapien Sapien. The first reading and workshop were both presented in 2015 and were directed by Baby Crow's Artistic Director, Margaret Grace Hee. The piece was also featured in the New York Theater Barn's New Work Series in February of 2016.

Mia Capotorto Somese is a director, writer, and teaching artist focused on the development of new musical theatre. She is an Associate Artist with Baby Crow Productions, a non-profit theatre company dedicated to developing work that is socially and environmentally conscious.

Visual Art – Jennifer May Reiland

Jennifer May Reiland presents her work Encierros. The title literally translates to ‘enclosures’ in Spanish, but the term is also used to describe "the running of the bulls" in English. The piece she is presenting draws parallels between enclosures in the world of bullfighting and in society's roles for women.

Jennifer May Reiland is a Brooklyn-based artist from Texas. She makes watercolor paintings on paper and hand-drawn animations. She creates unique worlds peopled by princesses, bullfighters, soldiers, priests, and assassins. A religious childhood and long stays in France and Spain have influenced the development of the visual world she inhabits. She has shown her work in New York City, Paris, Miami, and Houston. Her next show will be at The Drawing Center in Soho in August.
