Salon Solo {Radio}:Barbara Drum Sullivan
Presenting: Bed Among the Lentils by Alan Bennett
Alan Bennett wrote two series of monologues for the BBC, Talking Heads and Talking Heads 2, which, aside from being brilliant pieces, are remarkable in that most of them are written for women, and, even more remarkably, for older women.
Barbara Drum Sullivan was born and raised in New York City - she earned a bachelors degree in theater and went on a 20-year hiatus before returning to acting. Several years ago she went to graduate school by accident in Scotland.

Composers Artist Statements…
DINA PRUZHANSKY ARTIST STATEMENT: The text for 'On Love and Land' song cycle wasn’t written by a professional poet and aren't part of any publication. These are personal letters in verse, written by a man and a woman, addressed to each other. I was introduced to these texts by the author and radio broadcaster Robert Sherman, after he became familiar with my 'Song of Songs' vocal cycle and had collaborated with me on setting his story 'Teeny-Tiny Violin' as a symphonic fairytale.
I was immediately drawn to the gentle intimacy, passion, and sincerity felt in these letters. The couple's life story only enhanced and confirmed this impression. The first two letters were written by a 24 year old after his beloved had visited him in his hometown Tel-Aviv - but then had to return to her hometown, New York. Eventually, after few years of separation, they got married and settled in Israel. They lived happily together until his death.
The third, last letter in the song cycle, was written by his beloved wifes, nine years after his passing, which she opens by referring to the same events described in his letter dated 43 years earlier. "In your beloved country/which I visited one day/The orange blossoms bloomed/On the banks of Yarkon"- Her opening strikes an additional chord with me, as Tel-Aviv used to be my home for nearly fifteen years. Today, alongside with all the urbanization, the skyscrapers and the glass hi-tech buildings, these oranges are still there, blooming each spring, still capturing the very essence of the place. Hence the name of the cycle -'On Love and Land'.
I'm very excited to have the fantastic performers of the ARK trio premiere the songs, and couldn't possible imagine a better date to present them, than Valentine's Day :)
KIM SHERMAN ARTIST STATEMENT: A Prairie Diary came about after playwright Darrah Cloud and I wrote a music theater adaptation of Willa Cather’s first novel, “O Pioneers!” Our collaboration spanned over a three year period of experimenting with putting the novel into theatrical form. One of the most challenging aspects of the project was how to use vocal music in the context of the stage production. The songs became part of a “Prairie Greek Chorus” which appears throughout the play. Many songs were tried and then rejected from the final version. It is those “rejected” songs that became the inspiration for this song cycle, although two of the songs (“Transformation Song” and “I Call Your Name”) are still used in the theatrical production. Settings of three poems by Willa Cather complete the cycle.
The material in the text evokes images and feelings of my own roots in the Midwest. I wanted to give a voice to the vastness, the sky and the land, and to give a sound to the feeling of belonging to the dream of this country. And always, these words from “O Pioneers!” rang through my thoughts as I wrote the music: “For the first time, perhaps, since that land emerged from the waters of geologic ages, a human face was set toward it with love and yearning. It seemed beautiful to her, rich and strong and glorious. Her eyes drank in the breadth of it, until her tears blinded her. Then the Genius of the Divide, the great, free spirit which breathes across it, must have bent lower than it ever bent to a human will before. The history of every country begins in the heart of a man or a woman.”
A Prairie Diary was originally written for piano, clarinet and baritone voice. I then transposed the cycle for Allison Charney, who has sung the piano and clarinet version many times, including on a 1998 recording with Ben Loeb for the DSC label. In 2016-2017, I removed the clarinet part and created a new part for cello and restructured the order of the movements for the ARK Trio.
