USA: Aretha Louise Franklin, American musician, singer, songwriter and pianist is known as one if the most important popularizers if the soul music genre and is referred to as the Queen of Soul. The daughter of prominent minister and activist C. L. Franklin, Aretha began her singing career in her father's church at the age of ten and started recording four years later. When she switched from Columbia records to Atlantic Records, she began recording a string of hits '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman', 'Respect', 'Think' and 'Chain of Fools'. Aretha is the first female artist to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Rolling Stone magazine has ranked her atop as '100 Greatest Singers of All time' list.
Courtney Jean Allen (representing USA) has been performing in New York City for the past 7 years, both on stage and behind the camera. USA: Naomi Long Madgett was born July 5, 1923 in Norfolk Virginia. The daughter of a Baptist minister, Naomi spent her childhood years in Orange Country New Jersey where she attended an integrated school and excelled amidst the challenge of racism. At age 12, she published her first work poem 'My Choice' and continued to write throughout her early school days. In 1941 Naomi published her first book of poetry, just days after her High School Graduation. After earning her degree, she moved to Detroit with her where she taught High School poetry and continued to publish her original works. Throughout the years words remained her truth. And through the power of expression she shared her pain, her triumphs, her life. When I think of Naomi I am reminded of my grandmother…born just 7 years after Naomi. I am reminded of the struggles of a nation, a people and the unwavering beauty of art. A timeless allure that walks hand and hand with love.
Anita Gonzalez (representing Afro-Cuba) is a Deviser, Director, Writer and Professor. As the Artistic Director of Art Boundaries Unlimited Inc she fosters the exchange of international artists and art projects. She has directed around 52 shows and is currently working on 'The Hunting of the Snark.' Gonzalez is taking students to London this summer to devise around The Tempest.
Afro-Cuba: Luisa Capetilla was one of Puerto Rico's most recognized labor organizers and women's rights advocates. She was a "lector" or reader in the tobacco factories where she educated workers about their liberties and rights. In 1905 she helped to organize her first strike and she then traveled to New York, Tampa, the Dominican Republic and Cuba organizing sugar cane workers. Her essays and speeches were published in a book called "My Opinions About the Liberties, Rights, and Responsibilities of Women." She wore pants, she supported the Socialist Workers Party, and died of tuberculosis at age 43.
Anne Fizzard (representing Canada) is an actress, writer and illustrator originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. She is active in Off-Off-Broadway theater, especially as a longtime member of the WorkShop Theater Company in New York (currently on staff there as an Artistic Associate). Dominican Republic: Aída Cartagena Portalatín (June 18, 1918 — June 3, 1994) was a prolific poet, fiction writer and essayist. She wrote in Spanish. Some of her work has been translated into English and other languages.She was born in Moca, Dominican Republic; where she completed her elementary and secondary education. In her early career, Cartagena Portalatín was part of the "poesía sorprendida" (surprised poetry) movement in the Dominican Republic. Aida Cartagena Portalatín stands out as a universal voice that nevertheless speaks from a particular location in the Caribbean that is often overlooked by the world's educated people. One of her most famous poems is "Una mujer está sola".

Joanna Wallfisch (representing Germany) was born in London into a household of musicians, Joanna has music running through her veins. As a vocalist and poet her writing style is idiosyncratic. Germany: Anita Lasker-Wallfisch (born 17 July 1925 in Breslau, Germany (now Poland)) is a German-born cellist of world renown and is a surviving member of the Women's Orchestra in Auschwitz. After the liberation in 1945 Anita finally made it to England where her elder sister Marianne was. Anita became a founding member of the English Chamber Orchestra. She has lived in London ever since. Her son Raphael is also a cellist, whilst her daughter Maya a psychoanalyst. Anita no longer plays the cello but continues to travel though Europe to give talks in schools about her experiences during the War.
Candi Sterling (representing Jamaica) is a creative entrepreneur based in New York. Her diverse work focuses on environmental journalism and the performing arts. Autumn Kioti (representing Native America) is an actress, visual artist, aerialist, choreographer, flying trapeze instructor, martial artist and fight choreographer, playwright, and puppeteer. She has performed live from Miami, Florida to Jakarta, Indonesia and was most recently on stage in NYC as Cassandra in THE HIVE, an aerial and theatrical extravaganza which set Euripides' TROJAN WOMEN in a beehive in the midst of Colony Collapse Disorder. On screen, she was most recently seen in AS ABOVE, SO BELOW at Lincoln Center's Dance on Film Festival. Autumn’s work as a fine artist can be found now on display at the Riverside Library at Lincoln Center. Native America: Natanya Ann Pulley is half-Navajo, born to the Kiiyaa’aanii (Towering House) clan. She is currently working on her PhD in Fiction Writing at the University of Utah. She is the 2012 winner of the Scowcroft Prize judged by Laird Hunt for her essay “The Way of Wounds” and the Best Prose Writer of the 2009 Utah Writer's Contest. Puerto Rico: Soraida Martinez was born in New York City in 1956 and since 1986 has been in business as the owner of an art and design studio. Soraida studied art at Rowan University, where she graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a specialization in design; she also holds a Liberal Arts degree focusing on psychology. In Verdadism, every painting is always accompanied by a written social commentary based on Soraida's personal life experiences and observations on American society. Because it directly confronted social issues at a time when it was not fashionable, Verdadism has been called the first socially conscious art style of the 21st century. Soraida has gained recognition and received many awards for this unique thought-provoking and visually stimulating art style, which addresses issues of tolerance and a deeper understanding of the human soul.
Nicola Murphy (representing Republic of Ireland) is originally from Dublin, Ireland. She is an actor/producer/director, and also currently studying creative writing at Hunter College. She is Co-Artistic Director of Fundamental Theater Project, a NY based arts organization that supports international artists. She is thrilled to be a part of the women's salon International Women's day for the second year.
Republic of Ireland: Cara Dillon is an Irish folk singer from Co. Down, Northern Ireland. In 1995 she joined folk group Equation and she released her first solo album in 2001. The album contained traditional and original songs she wrote with her husband Sam Lakeman. Her second album Sweet Liberty entered the Irish album charts and the UK indie album charts. Dillon received The Meteor Irish Music Award for Best Irish Female. Her third album, After The Morning had the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra playing on two tracks. Her fourth album was the award winning Hill Of Thieves and the title song was voted by BBC listeners as one of the "Top 10" original songs to come out of Northern Ireland.

Romania: Vilma Veres is an 84-year-old retired agricultural engineer who raised four kids. She worked since she was 11 years old. She loved theater and literature, but like most women of her generation, she had to struggle to take care of her family. Jenny D Green (representing Scotland) is a Glasgow-born Actor and Producing Artist who has found her home in Brooklyn after working as a journalist in London and being educated in Manchester. She trained in acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and has appeared on a variety of off Broadway stages, most notably for the Storm Theatre, American Thymele Theatre and at Manhattan Theatre Source, where she worked for two years, initiating the role of Joannie in Billy Carver & the Children in Mind and beginning the work of The OPTimistiks, her producing company, that focuses on the smiley side of life. Scotland: Carol Anne Duffy was born in Glasgow in 1955. She grew up in Stafford and then attended the University of Liverpool where she received an honours degree in Philosophy in 1977. Her poetry publications have received many awards, including the Whitbread Prize and she is currently Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, the first woman and the first Scot to hold the position. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and lives in Manchester where she is Professor of Contemporary Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Heather Archibald (representing St Kitts & Nevis) migrated to New York from St. Kitts to study English at Lehman College where she earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. She has taught English as an adjunct of various CUNY colleges (mainly Lehman and City colleges) and currently teaches at Westchester Community College. Heather is also a poet.
St Kitts & Nevis: Jacinth Henry Martin who is first a poet and performer in Kitts-Nevis. She was the first elected woman official in the St. Government, where she served for five years as the Minister of Culture. She is currently the Ambassador to the US for St. Kitts and Nevis. Jacinth has always been a strong defender of of the rights of women in our country.
Gwenfair Vaughan (representing Wales) originates from Wales and is a fluent Welsh speaker. Possessing a diverse body of work from both sides of the Atlantic including film, theatre, television and voice work, she has also hosted for BBC radio and TV. Most recently she portrayed Hesione Hushabye in ‘Heartbreak House’ at The Pearl Theatre’s inaugural event to celebrate their new Off-Broadway venue on 42st . Her voice can currently be heard portraying Mrs Tiggywinkle in the new CGI animation series of ‘Peter Rabbit’ on Nickelodeon USA, BBC UK and other international networks.
Wales: Kate Roberts (1891-1985) was one of the foremost Welsh-language authors of the twentieth century. Known as ‘Brenhines ein llên’ (The queen of our literature), she is famous for her short stories and novels. Her work is based on the poor Welsh society in which she was brought up, and deals with the uneventful lives of humble people and how they come to terms with difficulties and disillusionments. Her work is remarkable for the richness of her language and for her perception. The role of women in society and progressive ideas about life and love are major themes in her work.
